TRIAD was first conceived in 1988 when representatives from AARP, the International Association of Police Chiefs and the National Sheriff’s Association came together and agreed to partner to ensure senior safety. Since those early days, more than 775 counties in 47 states, England and Canada have accepted the Triad model as an effective method of joining law enforcement officials and seniors for the purpose of lessening crime.

In Connecticut, the first Triad was formed in Bridgeport in 1991.  Other cities across the state have subsequently developed Triad programs over the last ten years. Crime prevention programs, RUOK programs, enhanced communication between senior adults and local law enforcement and other activities as appropriate have become a part of the Triad approach.

Triad is a cooperative effort of the CT Dept. of Social Services State Unit on Aging, Senior Mediare Patrol, the CT Association of Area Agencies on Aging, People's United Bank, the State of CT - Attorney General's Office, AARP,local senior centers and local law enforcement departments.  For a list of TRIAD chapters in Connecticut, click here: CT TRIADS.

A recent addition to the Triad approach in Connecticut is the copyrighted YELLOW DOT program. Developed  by People’s United Bank, and piloted by the Shelton Police Department and the Shelton Senior Center, the yellow dot is placed on the back windshield of the car of an adult 60 and over. This alerts police officers that a packet is in the glove compartment that can offer information on the driver. This, in turn, is of assistance to the older driver in a major accident or illness while driving.

“Senior Traveler” – In an era of increased awareness regarding air travel, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), People’s United Bank and the Connecticut Attorney General have developed an education video designed to offer senior citizens practical air travel safety tips. Entitled “Senior Travel”, the video is available to senior centers and others interested in sharing the information with senior groups. Contact the CT Attorney General’s Office to acquire a copy.
